21st-25th April 2009, New Wimbledon Studio Theatre, directed by Jeff Graves

Madness, ghosts and retribution are all themes of this complex and compelling supernatural thriller exploring murder & passion in Edwardian England.

Lord Arlington is dead, apparently from food poisoning. On the cusp of womanhood, his 17-year old daughter Emily feels the bereavement the strongest and turns to Shakespeare for comfort. But her childish fixation with Hamlet takes a deadly turn when she becomes convinced her mother Lady Cressida and family friend Richard Harker are guilty of her father’s murder. As her obsession and reality start to blur, she resolves to exact revenge.

Set at the height of the “Belle Époque”, but with a very modern sensibility, this intensely theatrical work steadily builds a sense of foreboding and tension until the thrilling climax. This oppressive atmosphere finds welcome relief in some blackly comic lighter moments particularly with the introduction of Mabel & Dorothy, the spinster sisters form Bridlington.
